Edward Boerner

(1902, Cedarburg, WI – 1981, Milwaukee, WI)

Edward Boerner was born in 1902 in Cedarburg, WI. He attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he graduated with his B.A. in 1926. He continued his studies at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the University of Iowa, where he studied under regionalist painter, Grant Wood, and received his M.A. in 1940.

Boerner was among the most well-liked and influential art teachers of Milwaukee. He began educating early in his career when he taught summer art classes in a renovated log cabin near Holy Hill. The year he graduated with his B.A., he began teaching at Koscluszko Junior High School. He would continue to teach art in Milwaukee Public Schools for 42 years.

From 1940 to 1947, Boerner taught at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, where he would also act as chairman of art education. In addition to teaching, Boerner served as the Head of the art department at Bay View Pulaski and Rufus King High Schools until retirement in 1967.
