Dennis Darmek

Artist Biography:

I have been producing photography, documentaries and video art for over 40 years. This media art has been featured on national and regional PBS and exhibited in museums, galleries and film festivals around the US and Europe. I have been awarded numerous grants and fellowships, with support from the Jerome Foundation, New Television Workshop, Film in the Cities, Wisconsin Arts Board and the Milwaukee Artists Foundation. After a 35 year career at Marquette University, I am currently working on a photo project about Vietnam.

Artist Statement:

The Swimmer: 40 Years in the Water

These photographs are from my family album. A couple of the images have been exhibited over the years, but most were never printed or shared. Tully, The Swimmer, and I have been together for over 40 years. The cameras and formats used on this work range from slides, negatives, 3-D film, panorama, point and shoot, to various digital files. Working with water as a background canvas provided a surprising, unpredictable palette of color, light and motion. I am grateful to have an art partner, muse, and wife who can swim.
