(1882, Broadhead, WI – 1972, Broadhead, WI)

Barn muralist, Frank Engebretson, created eighty and ninety-foot murals on the sides of barns as advertisements for farmers in LaFayette and Green counties. Often, he created these murals after getting to know the farmer and their interests. He often made suggestions and included the landscape and nature found in the surroundings.

His murals were featured in local and nationwide newspapers and magazines including Country Gentleman, Christian Science Monitor, the Prairie Farmer, and Life.

Despite his success, Engebretson had very little artistic training, working for a few months as a correspondence artist and taking a few lessons in tapestry painting in California. In addition to his mural painting, he worked mainly as house painter and interior decorator. In his later years, Engebretson turned to painting on a much smaller scale, selling his work to local patrons.
