John Yeates attended The Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, and was a student of Karl Priebe. In 1950 he won an award at Layton for the Best Group of Paintings (see photo). He graduated in 1951.

He remained a friend of Priebe's after graduation, and corresponded with Priebe from 1956-1971
