This painting was the very last (incomplete) painting that Forrest Flower was working on at the time of his early passing. Provenance documentation per Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article on Layton's Memorial Show of Flower's work, and Mary's son, Erik.
Mke Journal Sentinel article states: "The Last Portrait - Scores of Portraits for individuals and on commission for organizations were painted by Flower. At the time of his death he had portrait commissions totaling $17,000 which his illness prevented him from completing. His last portrait, still incomplete, is a part of this exhibition. It is of Miss Mary J. Theisen."
Mary Theisen Helm was a student and good friend of Forrest Flower and his family.
