WWII GI portrait facing left - unsigned, but it's mate (facing right is signed).
This portrait may be based on the Willie & Joe, cartoon characters created by Bill Mauldin for "Stars and Stripes" and later published in Mauldin's book "Up Front". It's possible that Mauldin may have met Lautenschlager while serving in North Africa.
Painting depicts the reality of American GIs as they looked after long periods of weary frontline combat.
