Elsner's grandparents emmigrated from Germany, and both of his parents were born in Milwaukee - as was Albert.

Elsner's birth certificate gives his name as Adalbert Wilhelm Elsner.

City directories between 1920 and 1926 indicate his occupation as an artist, and state he was an instructor at the State Normal School in 1922. The State Normal School aka. Milwaukee Normal School later became State Teacher's College in 1928, and in 1952 Wisconsin State College - Milwaukee, and merged with University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1956.

The 1940 census shows that in 1940 Elsner (about 52) was living in Cassville, Wisconsin (along the Mississippi River) with his wife and 12 year old daughter.
