Artist Statement:

I paint images that portray a presence in an environment or an absence of one and evoke an emotional response. Numerous transparent color washes define the form. Light as a subject gives meaning and suggests a narra- tive content.

Art making is an activity that documents my creative and critical thinking and takes the form of visual poetry. Paintings are abstracted portraits of places experienced, spaces navigated and those imagined. Photographing and drawing the world around me are also critical parts of my process. I use photography as a tool for observing nature, but the images are never directly painted from a photograph. Drawing from a model every week also strengthens a keen sense of observation, and strengthens design sensibilities.  The work suggests a human presence in an environment or an absence of one and evokes an emotional response.  Paintings are created in series — “Redwoods and water loops”, “Empty spaces,” “Trees and light” and “Sky in a box”. Current series is titled “Build a Forest.”  

Although painting on paper is my primary medium, I was formally trained in fine art printmaking.  I’ve travelled extensively and now maintain studios in southeastern Wisconsin Wisconsin and northern California.
