Einar V. Quist

BORN: 1899, Rockford, IL

DIED: 1988, Milwaukee, WI

Quist was a native of Rockford, Illinois where he later worked as a "practical printer".

He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and worked as a commercial artist with a Chicago advertising company before joing the Journal staff in 1927. From 1936 - 1943 he was the Journal's Art Director. Re retired fron the Journal in 1972 after 45 years! After retiring, he continued his career as an artist, mostly painting in watercolors and oils.

His work as a staff artist gave Milwaukee Journal readers portraits, news events, political illustrations, holiday promotions, and pure pictorial pleasures. The Journal's Editors often preferred illustrations to photographs when covering politics, so Quist accompanied the editorial staff to political conventions - including the Chicago Convention where Franklin D Roosevelt was nominated.

Quist's work was featured on the covers of nearly all sections of The Journal. His Holiday scenes decorated the front pages, capturing the spirit of the seasons.
