Artist’s Statement
My work attempts to draw attention to the history of places and to acknowledge that the past and the present can and should be recognized as existing at the same time. The remnants of earlier paint colors, signs, and patterns on walls and other surfaces are important to me as a way of documenting the history of places and by extension form a link to the people and cultural context of that time. Working in many layers that reveal both the present state of the painting and its earlier stages are a response to that idea.
