Paul Donhauser was born in Berlin, Germany in 1936. After WWII, he moved with his mother and brother to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. While attending Sheboygan High School, the young Donhauser showed artistic promise when one of his paintings was accepted for the Milwaukee Journal Art Calendar. After graduating high school, Donhauser continued his artistic studies at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, where he received his BA, the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he earned his MA, and Illinois State University, where he received his PhD.
In 1960, Donhauser married his wife, Lois Kilips. Four years later, he became an art professor at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. He held a position there until he retired in 2004.
