His full name was Karl Friedrich Peter Berthold Woltze. and his father Berthold was also an artist.
As a young man, Peter studied in various cities including Weimar, Karlsruthe, Munich, Venice, and Rome.
He was in the United States from 1882 - 1900, and also visited Mexico during that time. While in Milwaukee, Woltze knew Henry Vianden and painted a watercolor portrait of him in 1882. This painting and a couple additional watercolors are in the collection of the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Returning to Germany, 1900-1907 he lived in Frankfurt am Main but settled again in Weimar.
