Rachel Gertrude Grimm was recognized as “one of the most talented members of the rural art group”, by John Rector Barton.[1]
Grimm began drawing as a young child, copying pictures from magazines and books. Her only formal artistic training was at a summer class at the Emmanuel Missionary College at Berrien Springs, MI. There, her art teacher, Mrs. McCormick, taught students to paint what was around them, whatever was within reach. Grimm carried this lesson with her into her later years, often choosing the landscape found around her farm home in Sun Prairie as a source of subject matter.
