(1893, Oneida, WI – 1986, Weyauwega, WI)
Ellen Baxter was part of the Rural Art Association. While those in the group were known to be mostly self-taught, Baxter took private art lessons in the east and attended some UW Extension summer art programs for adults.
In the 1950s, Baxter’s husband died and she turned to painting to support herself, selling her work to those living in the rural communities around her home.
Baxter received John Steuart Curry Medal for Unusual Achievement from the Wisconsin Rural Art Association in 1985. She exhibited at the Appleton Gallery of Arts, Charles Allis Art Museum, and Lawrence University. Her work is part of the Museum of Wisconsin Art’s permanent collection.
