Edwin Knutesen was a rural Wisconsin artist, born in La Crosse but raised in Coeur d’Alene, ID.
Knutesen first attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison and then in 1923, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under George Oberteuffer, Hugh Breckenridge, and Daniel Garber. He returned to Wisconsin shortly after to work for the Wisconsin News while attending evening art classes at Milwaukee State Normal School. In 1925 and 1926, he studied in Paris at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and had a studio next to that of American Regionalist and Social Realist lithographer, Adolf Dehn.
