Extremely interesting mid-career painting of the Scranton (PA) coal yards and old mine ruins along the Great Allegheny Passage.
Santos painted this Spring of 1985 after a visit to the area with his family. Graffiti on ruin walls is especially interesting - somewhat surreal. Zingale's signature can be found in a couple places, as well as his initials, dates, and auto biographical imagery. Be sure to check out all of the detail photos.
Painting purchased directly from the Zingale estate, and frame built and adorned by Zingale as well.
Santos's wife Joan described to me how her cake decorating tips and piping bags had disappeared one day, and discovered Santos had been using them - to add detail and adornment (the squiggles) on the frame. Apparently he was happy with the technique, because they were used on multiple occasions.
